     Mr. Simpson was Came to Charleston, SC from County Antrim, Ireland. They were Scotch ancestry. John Simpson (our ancestor), the mechanic, was born in County Antrim, Ireland.

     Sarah Ellen Woodward was born on 8 March 1869. She married James Bankston McGruder Wofford, son of James Bennett Wofford and Juliet Susan Shands, on 4 October 1891. Sarah Ellen Woodward was Also had a pair of twins born on May 10, 1904 - no other record on them in 1904. She died on 26 February 1953 at age 83. She was buried after 26 February 1953 at Friendship Baptist Church, Pauline SC.

     James Bankston McGruder Wofford witnessed James B.M. Wofford, seventh and youngest child of James Bennett and Juliet Shands Wofford, was born January 24, 1863 in the old Wofford home near Friendship Church, Pauline, S.C., from which residence he has never moved. (He is the father of the unworthy scribe who wrote this record.) He had poor health all of his life until an operation removed the cause of his affliction in 1924. Consequently, he never grew to be a man of means. His hobbies have always been to obey the law and owe no man anything. He never made a debt that it was possible to prevent. Therefore, when the depression came on no man could “sell his home for debts” because he owed no man anything. He was never prosperous but he lived within his means. He lived on at the old home and cared for his parents when they were old and thereby inherited the home of his father.

On Oct 4, 1891 he married Sarah Ellen Woodward, daughter of James Woodward who lived at that time just back of Hebron Methodist Church.

Sara was brave, economical and God-fearing. She cheerfully cared for her parent’s in-law, James Bennett and Juliet during their old age. While her husband’s health was poor, she struggled on to rear their children and keep their home free from debt.

James and Sarah had eleven children. Four died in infancy and one child, Ansel, was scolded with hot coffee on July 3, 1910 from which he died thirty-six hours later. He fell from his mother’s chair on a kettle of hot coffee, which was sitting on the floor. When the coffee spilled out the little fellow rolled over in it, scalding his stomach. He was only two years old.


The other six children are: Lillie, Bomar, Ila, Merle, Helen and Cecil.¹ He began military service 3 S. C. Res. C. S. A. He was born on 24 January 1863. He married Sarah Ellen Woodward, daughter of James Baron Woodward and Linnie E. Huckabee, on 4 October 1891. James Bankston McGruder Wofford A picture of JBM Wofford shows twins that we believe were born on 10 May 1904. Have not found any record of this - note from Wofford Locke. on 10 May 1904. He died on 20 November 1938 at age 75. He was buried on 21 November 1938 at Friendship Baptist Church, Pauline SC.

     Elizbeth Roddy was Questionable spouse based on little information. Her married name was White. She married Robert White.

     M. M. White was born in 1829.

     James H. White was born in 1832.

     Sarah White was born in 1833 or 1839.

     Frances C Locke was born in 1859. She died before 1870 at Chester, SC.

     Kelly Wilbur Powers married Kerry Merle Robinson, daughter of David Evans Robinson and Cathy Merle McBride, on 9 June 2001.

     Wendy Wofford married Jefferson Patrick Locke, son of Dewey Francis Locke and Peggy Jewell Pierson, on 15 June 1996.
