Alexander Tatum Wofford witnessed Tatum, son of Rev. Isaac Edwin Wofford, is the real author of this family record. Although he was unable to see well enough to write, he dictated the contents from his wonderful storehouse of memory. Part of it was substantiated by family records and dates on tombstones.
Tatum married Matilda Taylor on Jan 7, 1883. He was a teacher in the public and private schools of Gordon County Georgia for fifty years. He served as a member of the County Board of Education for sixteen years. He is a deacon in the Liberty Baptist Church.
Tatum braved many hardships in his struggle or the improvement of education in his county. While teaching, it was often necessary to wade swollen streams in order to reach his home after a day in the schoolroom.
But hard work and study had their effects on his eyesight. He can now see only vague objects. The hardest cross that he has ever had to bear is not to be able to use the instrument of which he was so long a master, his pen. The county newspapers to which he contributed many articles misses the use of that instrument. He still communicates to his friends through dictation to other writers.
Tatum and Matilda have two children: Milton and Mayme.1 He was born on 4 August 1860 at Ranger, Georgia. He married Matilda Taylor on 7 January 1883. Alexander Tatum Wofford died on 15 September 1938 at Calhoun, Georgia, at age 78;
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery
Calhoun, Gordon County, Georgia, USA.
